3 rules on how to set effective morning routines?

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy or DBT therapy tells us that routines and structures contribute to our satisfaction in life. If you are very unsatisfied with your life, if you think that life is dull, there is no juice in your life, then you need to consider this concept of DBT therapy. Simply implying routines and structure to your day can make you lot more satisfied with your life. When we are talking about routines there is a lot of information available on the net and it does a fantastic job to complicate simple things. Your daily routines, it can be morning/afternoon/evening or bedtime routines, they need not be very complicated. Below are some tips to help you develop go routines.

Keep it simple and short

You don’t have to make your routines time consuming. I have seen some people making their morning routines two hours long! What happens is that doing morning routine for two hours exhausts you for the rest of the day. When I first started with my routines I tried to “squeeze” in everything. My morning routine included meditation, exercise, journaling, planning, reading, affirmations and so on. It took me around 2 hours to get it all done. Naturally I couldn’t continue to 2nd day and I gave up. Have you experienced something similar? let me know in the comments. You have to keep it simple and you have to keep it short.

You have to understand that when creating your morning or evening routines you have to keep a balance between what you need to do and what you want to do.

Focus on what gives you happiness

When you are dissatisfied with your life it only happens because you are too much focused on what needs to be done and you forget about what you want to do. For example, if you are too much focused on your career, you are too much focused on earning money and taking care of your family that you forget to do what you want to do. It can be going for a walk in the park or painting something, reading your favorite novels or whatever you like. We always sacrifice what we want to do and and spend our days with what needs to be done. The more we make this choice the more we are giving away our power to chose. If there is an imbalance we push ourselves to extreme and life becomes unsatisfying. Love yourself, take care of yourself with routines. Try to do simple things that will give you a little bit of happiness in your routines. For example daily routine of Dalai Lama is not very strange, it’s not very complicated, it is simple – there’s meditation, there is gardening, there is cooking, reading and before bed watching TV. That is what Dalai Lama does.

Be flexible

So just lay down a few ideas don’t try to include a lot many activities in your morning and evening routines. One or two can be good. It can be listening to some favorite music and dancing to it, whatever you like, just love yourself. Having a proper structure in your life gives you lot of energy and lot of mental peace. You have to avoid becoming too rigid for that. Some people are like they schedule their morning and evening routines in their calendars, they do it forcefully. Sometimes you don’t want to wake up at 7:00 a.m. just to fulfill your morning routine and it’s ok. You don’t have to be too rigid with your morning and evening routines. You can be flexible, you can do whenever you want to do. The key here is to remember that you have to create a balance between what you need to do and what you want to do. If there is a balance you will be living a very satisfied life.
